On behalf of the Organizing Committee we are pleased to let you know that the Global Symposium on Pain (GSoP) will be held on August 22-24, 2012 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. We anticipate at least 400 attendees spanning the public, private, industry (pharmaceutical, clinical and research equipment and supplies, medical and scientific publishing), clinic and academia sectors of the community involved with the studies and treatment of pain.
Pain is severely debilitating condition associated with numerous disease states and leading to emotional and physical suffering, disability and frequently to depression and suicides. As an educational meeting, GSoP will provide the participants and specifically students and young investigators with the information on the modern state of understanding of mechanisms and ways of treatment of chronic pain states. As a scientific event, the Symposium will bring together international clinical and basic science experts for symptom-based review of major advances and unresolved questions in our knowledge of pain mechanisms. The balanced clinical and animal data-based approach will serve both educational and scientific missions of GSoP. It is expected that the Symposium will narrow the gap intrinsically existing between clinical and basic science pain researchers and promote development of translational and symptom-based studies as opposed to palliative treatments of chronic pain states. TheGSoP is also nearly unique in the selection of Russia as host country. Russia is experiencing the revival of its science. There is an enormous potential for fruitful international research, clinical and industrial collaboration in this country. Pavlov Institute of Physiology in St. Petersburg is a major physiological center of the Russian Academy of Science, Polenov Russian Scientific Research Neurosurgical Institute is one of the largest clinical centers involved in pain research, and therefore running GSoP-2012 in St. Petersburg, Russia, will undoubtedly greatly benefit the integration of the world and Russian studies on pain.
St. Petersburg is the large cultural center of Russia, which is often called its cultural capital. According UNESCO statistics, St. Petersburg occupies the eighth position among the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Attending the Symposium in St. Petersburg, the participants will receive the unique opportunity to combine professional interests with enthralling trip to one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
The meeting is expected to have a wide international representation. We also hope that beyond researches, clinicians and students, this meeting will also attract representatives of many other professions involved in the care and treatment of patients.
